EP.52 Experiment Subject, Vetter

The moonlight hanging in the sky was obscured by passing clouds. In the deep, dark forest, a building existed, a research lab of unknown name.

The interior of the lab was shrouded in darkness. The blaring siren sounds echoed within, signaling an emergency.

The walls were splattered in red, and the corpses of people were scattered, contorted and neglected. Equipment on the lab tables lay destroyed beyond recognition.

Other facilities were in a similar state. It seemed as if something had passed through, leaving chaos within the research lab. Occasionally, small flames flickered. In the dim light of the flames, the presence revealed itself, a body emitting a gleaming blue light.

With a lustrous glow, reminiscent of a large sphere, it traversed the interior of the lab, dancing between the light and darkness amid the corpses and equipment.

Leaving sticky footprints on the floor as it moved forward, it eventually came to a stop.

The research lab, enveloped in the disgusting scent of chemicals and the thick smell of blood, seemed to slide, concealing itself at the border between darkness and the flames.

“It’s all over now.”

Its identity was a slime. Its name was Vetter.

It was a slime with intelligence to the extent that it could be considered sentient.

Initially, it was no different from an ordinary slime. It couldn’t speak, and it couldn’t even think. Naturally, it had no name. It was just a slime that had lived according to its desires.

Vetter, as a slime, lived peacefully in a dungeon filled with slimes.

However, one day, tragedy struck. A group appeared in the dungeon. They were all humans.

No, they were not ordinary humans. They were armed with terrifying equipment and powerful strength. This group entered the slime dungeon and captured Vetter along with all the other slimes.

The captured slimes were taken somewhere.

The place they were taken to had nothing but white walls. The humans confined themselves and their kind in a strange cage.

Until then, Vetter’s mind had been empty. It simply surrendered its body as it was led along. Time passed continuously. As time went on, the number of its fellow captives dwindled rapidly.

Then, one day, the humans came for a slime. They took Vetter and began injecting strange fluids into its body. A stinging and tingling sensation entered its body. It soon spread throughout. And at that moment.

“Doctor, Vetter’s reaction is minimal. Should we administer more medication?”

It began to understand the humans’ words. It also became aware of its name, Vetter. At the same time, something flashed in its mind. It was a thought.

Of course, it was very faint.

However, now Vetter did not surrender its body as it was led by the flow of time.

It started to perceive its situation, thinking at least a little. Time continued to pass. Humans still injected strange substances into Vetter every day.

The initial stinging and tingling pain were no longer felt. It was a sensation of dullness spreading throughout the entire body. Liberated from pain, strength began to surge throughout its body simultaneously. But Vetter concealed it.

‘I am…’

Daily repetitive experiments. Vetter now realized that it was an experimental subject. It listened to the conversations of humans around it. It was good study material for Vetter.

Time passed again. Vetter was still confined in its current location. Through the conversations of humans, it learned that this place was a laboratory.

The humans experimenting on Vetter were referred to as researchers. The exact identity was unknown. They were simply beings conducting experiments on Vetter and its kin.

‘I will…’

A tingling sensation arose in Vetter’s mind. And a part of Vetter’s body began to change. It changed rapidly and then returned to its original state. But Vetter didn’t miss the brief change. Something was happening.

How much time had passed?

In this world, various beings existed. There were monsters like Vetter, as well as humans more powerful than ordinary humans. Those who destroyed the world Vetter lived in were not ordinary humans either.

They were a presence called Hunters. And there were researchers who experimented on Vetter and its kin. But Vetter still didn’t know what their true identities were.

One thing was certain. They killed Vetter’s kind. They were the ones who destroyed the world Vetter lived in.

The emotions that were insignificant when it had no thoughts at first were now swirling in Vetter’s mind. The tickling feeling turned into a whirlwind. Realizing this, a single goal emerged in Vetter’s empty mind.

‘I want to kill them.’

The face of the researcher who injected an unknown liquid into Vetter every day came to its mind. The number and position of the dots on that researcher’s face were vividly remembered.

Simultaneously, Vetter’s body began to change. It transformed into the appearance of the researcher Vetter had in mind.

Fortunately, there was no one around. The laboratory was dark, and there was no one to witness Vetter’s transformation.

As Vetter transformed into the appearance of the researcher, Vetter groped its own body. It opened its mouth.

“Ah…”

A voice came out. At the same time, Vetter articulated the goal it had in mind.

“I will kill them.”

Words flowed smoothly from its mouth. The tone of the voice stabilized. To anyone looking, Vetter now appeared to be a perfect human. At the same time, Vetter’s body rapidly crumbled. It returned to its original slime state.

Time passed. By the time the very concept of time itself was about to disappear, an opportunity to achieve Vetter’s goal arrived.

“Hmm. Experimenting with a slime seems to be difficult after all.”

Vetter knew the owner of this voice well. It was the director of the laboratory responsible for the current facility where Vetter was trapped, leading the researchers, an elderly researcher with white hair swept back. Unlike the gentle wrinkles on his forehead, his eyes had a menacing look.

“Well, nothing to be done. Dispose of Vetter.”

With just one sentence, he left the laboratory. As the director left, the actions of the researchers inside hastened. In order to follow the director’s command, they all approached Vetter.

One of the researchers stood out, a guy who injected liquid into Vetter every day. At that moment, Vetter stood up.

“!”

The researchers who had focused their attention on Vetter all showed bewilderment. It swiftly transformed its body. The liquid body bubbled and twisted, then suddenly transformed into the appearance of the researcher in front of it.

“What is this…!”

All the researchers’ faces showed shock. They couldn’t fathom what was happening right now. Why did it change? In the sudden situation, thinking stopped, and the body stiffened. One thing was clear.

“The experiment was a success.”

But simultaneously, it was their downfall. Vetter, now resembling a researcher, began to move. When it swung its hand, the head of the researcher in front exploded, and blood splattered in all directions.

That was the beginning. With bloodlust as if releasing all the accumulated resentment, Vetter started eliminating everyone one by one.

Inside the laboratory, only screams echoed. As if vowing not to leave any living beings, it continued to move. Quite some time had passed since the frenzy of blood began.

Vetter had turned the entire laboratory upside down, but unfortunately, the director couldn’t be found.

“That rat.”

He probably noticed and slipped away. It was regrettable, but there was nothing to be done.

“It’s all over now.”

Vetter looked around. The inside of the laboratory was already in shambles. Perhaps soon, human reinforcements would come to this place. Now, it was time for it to slowly withdraw.

“Doctor…”

Though he had slipped away for now, Vetter vowed that someday he would kill the director with his own hands. As it was about to leave the laboratory slowly,

[Follow me.]

A voice, coming from an unknown direction, reached Vetter’s ears. It turned back toward the direction of the voice.

“Who is it!”

But there was nothing there.

[Serve me.]

The voice echoed once again. In that voice, a power that Vetter dared not approach emanated.

‘It’s a being much higher than me.’

Chewing on the words spoken by the voice, Vetter thought. At first, he said to follow him, and then he asked Vetter to serve.

The unidentified counterpart desired Vetter. Of course, Vetter had nowhere to go right now. No, especially after turning the laboratory upside down, those involved wouldn’t leave it alone.

It was a fact Vetter had learned over many years spent in the laboratory. This laboratory was operated by an unknown organization, and those who opposed their intentions all disappeared, even if they were fellow researchers. Just by looking at them, it wasn’t hard to predict what would happen to Vetter’s future.

Vetter closed its eyes for a moment. Too much had changed to return to the former simplicity. Vetter was a slime and simultaneously not a slime. Its kin had died a long time ago. There was no longer anyone in the world to represent Vetter as a slime. Surely, that’s what Vetter thought.

[Slime, follow me.]

Surely, that’s what Vetter thought, but someone appeared who called Vetter a slime.

“…..”

An unknown voice. Vetter thought for a moment, then quickly made a decision.

“I will follow you.”

As Vetter accepted, the space in front of it began to distort.

The scenery inside the burning laboratory changed.

“Dungeon?”

Yes, it was a very familiar yet nostalgic feeling.

Of course, it wasn’t the dungeon Vetter had stayed in in the past.

“Oh, a new one has appeared.”

And there was someone speaking to Vetter. It wasn’t a human, it was a monster like Vetter.

The creature welcomed Vetter. Vetter looked at the creature’s face. The opponent was very handsome, and the muscles on the body were sculpted.

“……”

Vetter’s head turned to the side. Besides the handsome monster, there were other beings. Quite a number of Ghouls and, alongside them, a human trembling in fear.

Next to them was a knight armed with black armor and weapons. A skeleton holding a large book accompanied the knight.

They all looked at Vetter and nodded.

The skeleton began to write something.

Vetter could instinctively understand.

The knight and the skeleton also possessed tremendous power.

Of course, they couldn’t match the unidentified voice that spoke to Vetter, but they also possessed tremendous power, and simultaneously, Vetter could discern that they were allies.

“Tap, tap, tap.”

The skeleton, still continuously writing something while looking at Vetter, clacked its bones together. Vetter could understand what it meant. Yes, this was a test. It was a test for Vetter, an evaluation of its own abilities.

The being Vetter had sworn to serve had revealed its identity. Vetter didn’t know who it was, but this moment was a representation of itself for that being.

Thump-thump.

Thump-thump-thump.

Vetter’s body twisted and started to change.
